CANNES REVIEW: 'After the Battle' Brings an Activist Romance to Tahrir Square

indieWIRE - 1 hour 57 min ago
Now that a number of documentaries have dealt with the 2011 Egyptian uprising at Cairo's Tahrir Square -- most prominently, the scrappy "1/2 Revolution" and broadly focused "Tahrir" -- it comes as no surprise that the events have been applied to a fictional scenario, and by no less than a prominent Egyptian filmmaker, Yousry Nasrallah ("Gate of Sun"). Ably using the turmoil at Tahrir as his backdrop, Nasrallah's "After the Battle" follows a burgeoning, ill-fated romance between two characters uniquely impacted by social upheaval. The director's use of existing events to form the movie's backbone led one colleague to compare it to Haskell Wexler's "Medium Cool," which took place at the 1968 Democratic National Convention, but the precedent applies in theory alone. Despite its admirable intentions, "After the Battle" constantly fights an uphill battle to reach its potential and never quite gets...

Fisher Stevens to Direct Adaptation of Philip Roth's 'American Pastoral'

indieWIRE - 1 hour 59 min ago
Philip Roth’s Pulitzer Prize-winning 1997 novel “American Pastoral” will be turned into a film by screenwriter John Romano (“The Lincoln Lawyer”) and director Fisher Stevens. Lakeshore Entertainment, which produced adaptations of Roth’s “The Human Stain” and “The Dying Animal,” is producing the project with Sidney Kimmel Entertainment, with filming set to begin early in 2013. In “Pastoral,” Roth’s alter ego Nathan Zuckerman narrates the story of Seymour “Swede” Levov, whose great post-war life is thrown into disarray when his teenaged daughter commits an act of political terrorism during the Vietnam War protests of 1968. The book is the first novel in a trilogy that includes “The Human Stain.” Lakeshore’s Tom Rosenberg and Gary Lucchesi are producing with Sidney Kimmel. SKE execs Jim Tauber and Matt Berenson are executive producers. “Philip Roth is...

Apichatpong Weerasethakul' MEKONG HOTEL in Cannes

FilmFestivals Cannes - 2 hours 12 min ago

Country: THAILAND, UNITED KINGDOM
Year: 2012
Duration: 61.00 minutes

Thai Director Apichatpong Weerasethakul, who took home the 2010 Palm d’Or for his film ‘UNCLE BOONMEE WHO CAN RECALL HIS PAST LIVES (2010)’, returns to Cannes two years later to present his latest work, MEKONG HOTEL (2012).

MEKONG HOTEL is an experimental film featuring the director himself as he works with cast and crew on another of his films called: THE ECSTACY GARDEN. Authentic to Apichatpong’s style the film uses a potpourri of genres mixing reality and dream, earthy and supernatural, feature and documentary, creating his own world where the borders between narrative and nonfiction are blurred and where all opposites are set apart yet blended together. Shot during monsoon season in Thailand on the Mekong River on the border between Laos and Thailand, the river itself becomes a character and symbol of the paradox and unity of opposites in the MEKONG HOTEL.

Written and Directed by: Apichatpong WEERASETHAKUL
Starring: Jenjira PONGPAS, Maiyatan TECHAPARN, Sakda KAEWBUADEE, Chai BHATANA

Cannes opening gala diner: the menu

FilmFestivals Cannes - Wed, 05/16/2012 - 21:27

Electrolux brought culinary artistry to the Opening Gala with a dining collaboration between two Michelin star chefs; Bruno Oger and Rasmus Kofoed.

Frederique Pirenne, PR Director Europe, Electrolux said: “The Festival is an internationally renowned stage for originality so for the 65th anniversary we wanted to deliver an opening event that reflects the talent and inventiveness that have contributed to its success.  We’ve worked with Michelin star chefs for over 90 years, helping to support their creative endeavours in the kitchen, so it makes sense that we honour the festival with a dining experience that matches the artistry of the attendees.”

Situated next to the Palais de Festivals, the Electrolux Agora was a hub of gastronomic inspiration as it brought together Oger and Kofoed  - two chefs with different food backgrounds – as well as enabling them to create a menu that showcased modern food innovation mixed with classic technique.

Bruno Oger, owner of the Two Michelin Star Villa Archangel in Cannes, prepared the amuse bouche and main course, which showcased French intuition for ingredient combinations; whilst Bocuse d’Or Gold medal winner, Rasmus Kofoed, prepared a starter and dessert that highlighted the simple strength of Scandinavian produce.

The Depressing Commentary on Stardom in 'Smash'

indieWIRE - Wed, 05/16/2012 - 18:21
From the beginning, NBC's "Smash" has set itself up as a show about dichotomy, not just with its two actresses vying for the same lead role, newcomer Karen (Katharine McPhee) and experienced chorus girl Ivy (Megan Hilty), but with its very theme and format. It wants to focus on process, to showcase the effort, rehearsing and fund-gathering that goes into making a Broadway musical, but it also wants to be about backstage conniving and romantic melodramatics. It aims to be a semi-realistic look behind the scenes of the business that is show, but also to be out there in the audience happily basking in a heightened song-and-dance number. And it tries to offer two different ideas about stardom, about whether stars are born or made, via Karen and Ivy and via Marilyn Monroe, the subject of "Bombshell," the musical that they and the other characters of "Smash" are hoping to make into a hit. The series hasn't balanced any of these elements well...

indieWIRE - Wed, 05/16/2012 - 17:03
Nobody knew quite what to expect from "What's Wrong With Virginia," Dustin Lance Black's directing debut, when it premiered at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival. But few expected the critical backlash that followed. The Southern-set film, based loosely on his childhood experiences, stars Jennifer Connelly as schizophrenic mother engaged in a long-time affair with Mormon sherrif Richard Tipton (Ed Harris), who's struggling to raise her son who also has the hots for Tipton's daughter (Emma Roberts). That's a heady plot for a newbie director, but Black wasn't just any newcomer. Prior to arriving in Toronto, the California native was fresh off of winning an Oscar for penning the screenplay to "Milk." In the process he became a gay icon and had just completed collaborating with Clint Eastwood on their J. Edgar Hoover biopic. Black was experiencing a career high. That ended with the reviews for "What's Wrong With...

Cannes 2011 Recap: Charting a High-Grossing, Oscar-Bound Crop

indieWIRE - Wed, 05/16/2012 - 16:09
A year ago when Woody Allen's "Midnight in Paris" opened the Cannes Film Festival, no one would have ever guessed it was the beginning of a fairly amazing success story.  Released in theaters a week later, the film would go on to become Allen's highest grossing film ever, and get him his first Oscar in 25 years. "Midnight in Paris" represents the crown jewel -- at least in terms of box office -- of what turned out to be a pretty remarkable group of Cannes 2011 alums. Three films in official competition -- "Paris," "The Artist" and "Drive" -- ended up grossing north of $35 million in North America, while four ended up with $50 million+ gross worldwide. The year prior, the highest grossing film in official competiton -- in terms of North American release -- ended up being Doug Liman's "Fair Game," which took in just under $10 million Stateside. What's more, Cannes ended up one upping Toronto in...

The English-language “Beast” takes place in a Tokyo where a mysterious Westerner gets sucked into a turf war between the Yakuza and old-school Russian mobsters. Seijun Suzuki directed the original film. “Among Nikkatsu’s 6,000+ film library, this is one of our most revered titles,” said Sato. “We have a tremendous amount of respect for Mr. Woo and are excited he is directing this film for the international market. We think this is a great way to start off the next 100 years of filmmaking history!” Lori Tilkin, Aki Sugihara and Yoko Asakura are executive producers. Lion Rock produced “Paycheck,”...

CANNES INTERVIEW: 10 Things You Should Know About New Directors Fortnight Artistic Director Edouard Waintrop

indieWIRE - Wed, 05/16/2012 - 14:59
Many things at Cannes don't change, but leadership at Directors Fortnight is a different story. This year, there's a new team in town, led by artistic director Edouard Waintrop. Formerly in charge of Switzerland's Fribourg Film Festival, the longtime film critic replaced Frederic Boyer, who left Fortnight last fall after only two years following severe backlash from the French press for his programming decisions. (He's now the artistic director of the Tribeca Film Festival.) No stranger to the programming game or the pressures of Cannes, Waintroup sat down with Indiewire on Wednesday afternoon, a day ahead of the festival's opening night, to share some of his thoughts about this year's 21-title lineup -- the result of watching more than 1,400 films. He knows why he got the job. "Once of the challenges was to make people speak of the Quinzaine in a positive way. That was not too much the case last year. Maybe it wasn't only a problem of...
